The transitory absence of several clotting factors in a newborn baby.

چکیده
Haemorrhagic diathesis of the newborn is usually characterized by a physiological deficiency of prothrombin and probably also by a deficiency of proconvertin (van Creveld, Paulssen, Ens, Mey, Versteegh and Versteeg, 1954). Sometimes a third clotting-factor, pro-accelerin, is also lacking. We found a simultaneous deficiency both of prothrombin and pro-accelerin in some cases of intra-uterine melaena and of haemolytic disease of the newborn; it is also found in severe congenital damage of the liver (van Creveld, Paulssen and Teng, 1952). We do not know how far in such permanent congenital haemorrhagic diatheses as haemophilia, fibrinopenia and Christmas disease other clotting factors are transiently lacking after birth, as well as a temporary shortage of prothrombin and a permanently deficient specific clotting factor. Except in these instances we can say that no cases of a haemorrhagic diathesis in the newborn are known where a deficiency of more than three clotting-factors is found. We were able to observe a transitory haemorrhagic diathesis in a young infant in whom four clottingfactors were simultaneously deficient. It was remarkable that this deficiency involved just those clotting-factors which are necessary for the whole second phase of the coagulation process.

Background: Neonatal deaths mostly occur within the first one week and first 24 hours of life from a variety of conditions. Objective: To examine the role of significant hypothermia and hypoglycaemia, in addition to some other factors, in neonatal mortality occurring within the first 24 hours of admission. Methods: A prospective study of newborn infants hospitalized within the first 24 hours of ...
متن کاملThe Etiology of Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia
Etiology of Physiologic Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia. Every newborn infant develop·s hyperbilirubinemia during the first week of life which is called "physiologic". There are several factors responsible for the development of physiologic hyperbilirubinemia, as follows: 1. Increased bilirubin production, due to a - Increased blood volume. b - Decreased R.B.C. survival time. c - Increased in...

Baby had thrombocytopenia with platelets counts of 11000/ mm3 and high CRP titer. Baby had petechial haemorrhagic spots all over the ...
متن کاملCharacteristics of six newborn infants with postnatal findings of severe intracranial haemorrhage.
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to study the characteristics of newborn infants with postnatal findings of severe neonatal intracranial haemorrhage. METHODS All the records of babies who underwent surgery from 1997 to 2002 for intracranial haemorrhage were reviewed. These were correlated with their antenatal records to see if fetal intracranial haemorrhage had been detected at the 2...
متن کاملKernicterus in Two Generations: A Need for More Aggressive Preventive Measures
Bilirubin induced brain damage is still a common cause of morbidity and mortality in Nigerian infants. No much success has been recorded in decades despite the fact that brain damage from bilirubin toxicity in the newborn is easily preventable with affordable and effective means. We report a case of a newborn with acute bilirubin encephalopathy. This case was considered of interest because the ...
